What is prime interest?

The prime interest rate is the interest rate that commercial banks charge on loans to their most creditworthy customers and is linked to and changed in accordance with the repo rate, which is set by the South African Reserve Bank. When the repo rate goes up or down, the prime interest rate changes by the same margin.
